#Hwentia/ #ahentia /#Etso /#Uda (Nigerian) /#Negropepper /#Grainsofselim /#Guineapepper #Senegalpepper/#Ethiopianpepper/#Moorpepper /#Africanpepper – and the list goes on. Wow this spice is known to different people by different names.

It is widely used due to its aromatic flavour which can be likened to a mixture of #cubebpepper (#sorowisa )and #nutmeg. It is sometimes used as a replacement for pepper. It’s used in porridge (#Hausa or # corndough #koko), soups, (this is a key ingredient in #Nigerian #pepper #soup), stews, spice rub for fish (a great pair), drinks such as #sobolo, citrus juices. It’s also a key ingredient in the spice rub for kelewele. Basically it has such a lovely aroma that it goes with most dishes. It also pairs well with #ginger. However using too much of it could make your dish bitter. The bitterness comes from the seeds.

Apart from its culinary benefits, hwentia is known to:
• Help cure bronchitis.
• Help in the treatment of dysentery
• Ease toothaches
• Help in the treatment of Asthma and rheumatism.

It also has these benefits: used for treating insecticidal, anti-tumor, anti-asthmatic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, hypotensive and coronary vasodilatory effects.

Considering how useful this spice is, go ahead and use this spice as much as you want and be creative with it.
