Authentic Easy Kelewele Recipe using Dry Spices

This easy recipe has all the authentic flavours even though we are using dry spices. Traditionally kelewele is made with fresh ingredients like fresh pepper, ginger, onion and spices like clove sand Hwentia to give it some umami flavours. Using the recommended spices here ensures that you are not missing out on any umami flavours. We have used both AVK Pepper Mix for Kelewele and AVK 7 Spice Blend together to intensify the umami flavours. But if you are not big on these flavours, you can use just thePepper Mix for Kelewele. This recipe is simple, quick, less hustle yet very authentic and delicious.

Equipment

  • 1 Deep frying pot
  • 1 Colander
  • 2 Bowls
  • 1 Slotted Ladel

Ingredients
  

  • 3 Medium ripe Plantains Or use very ripe plantains according to your preference.
  • 1 ½ tbsp AVK Pepper Mix for Kelewele
  • 1 tsp AVK 7 Spice Blend
  • ½ tsp Dried Sage
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • 500 ml Oil

Instructions
 

  • Cut up 3 Medium ripe Plantains to desired shape or as shown in the video and set aside.
  • Place all the dry spices 1 ½ tbsp AVK Pepper Mix for Kelewele, 1 tsp AVK 7 Spice Blend, ½ tsp Dried Sage and ½ tsp Salt in the bowl and mix until well combined.
  • Add in the plantains and coat well with the spices.
  • Heat up the 500 ml Oil and shallow fry the plantains.
  • After 3 minutes, stir and continuously stir to ensure even cooking and browning.
  • Remove the plantains from the oil once cooked. Strain excess oil using a colander.
  • Serve the plantains whilst hot or warm.
