Today I am sharing with you how to make street-style fried yams using an air fryer.
Fried yams are another Ghanaian delicacy that is usually sold as street food. It is usually served with fried fish, tsoofi (turkey tail), and some shito or meko. Being able to recreate these street-style fried yams but in a much healthier way is just so desirable. Less oil means much healthier, right?
Well, let me give you some tips on how to get the air fryer version as nice as an oil-fried version. Do watch the Youtube video to get all the steps and tips. It is really simple.
The recipe is below.
Street Style Fried Yams
Ingredients
- A tuber of Fresh Yam (Puna Yam preferably)
- Salt to taste
- Oil
Instructions
- Wash and peel the skin off the yam
- Cut the tuber of yam into half. Cut each half into halves again. Then cut diagonally the wedge of the new halves to get a big wedge. Now cut smaller wedges from this. Check the
video for illustration. - Wash the yam wedges in water until the water runs clear.
- Salt the yam wedges either in water or without. If using rock salt, soak it in water to help the salt to dissolve. If using table salt, no need for water. Set it aside for about 20 minutes to let the salt penetrate the yams.
- Drain the water if used. The tip is to have very little moisture on the yams so that they can crisp up nicely and quickly.
- Preheat the air fryer to 180 degrees celsius.
- Add about 2-4 tablespoons of oil to the yams. Toss to coat well.
- Put a layer of the yams in the air fryer and fry at a temperature of 200-180 degrees celsius for about 20 minutes.
- Halfway through the cooking time, check and toss the yams to help the underside get cooked and browned as well.
- Add a little bit more oil if needed to get the fried effect. But note, we are looking for a healthier version of so less oil as much as possible.
- Once crisped up, remove and serve warm. We served ours with our Ready to Grill Guinea Fowl (Akonfem)
